Respected Amma,

Please don’t mistake me for disturbing you — I only write out of deep appreciation.

Your novel (yes, I call it your novel, because that’s how it feels to me) has stirred some powerful and unsettling thoughts in me.

You needn’t trouble yourself to respond, Amma. I hope to discuss these with you in person someday, if possible. For now, please just feel happy knowing that your work has made a profound impact on me.

Here are two questions that continue to linger in my mind:

(1) *Mikolai’s Confession*

One of the two painters, Mikolai, falsely confesses to the murder of the pawnbroker and her sister — despite being innocent.

The novel doesn’t explore his motives in depth, except to mention that he is of a masochistic nature, deriving a strange satisfaction from harming himself.

In real life, I’ve seen actors (like Kamal) and sportsmen (like Kohli) who push themselves hard, sometimes even self-punishing — but always for delayed gratification and a greater future goal.

But Mikolai’s confession felt extreme and irrational — not for gain, but seemingly to destroy himself.

This makes me wonder:

> Have you ever come across such a person or type in real life?

Or *is this Dostoevsky’s way of symbolizing something deeper?*

(2) *Raskolnikov’s Transformation*

Amma, I’d also like to know if my understanding of Raskolnikov’s journey is in line with the novel:

1. Raskolnikov does not initially repent for the murders, even after reaching Siberia.

2. He instead regrets confessing, feeling pressured by Sonia and Dunia.

3. He remains emotionally distant from Sonia, viewing her as the reason for his downfall.

4. During introspection, he realizes other prisoners adore Sonia, while he remains isolated.

5. This awakens love for Sonia in him — perhaps for the first time — and a desire for a morally upright, respected life.

6. As his attitude transforms, he becomes warmer toward fellow prisoners, who in turn grow fond of him.

My question:

> Is this aspiration for a “moral and respected life” the true turning point in Raskolnikov — where he finally sees that his confession was the right thing to do?

கடந்த மூன்று வாரங்களாக “குற்றமும் தண்டனையும்” நாவலுடன் வைக்க மனமில்லாமலும் வைத்தால் எடுப்பதற்கு அஞ்சியும் மல்லுக்கட்டினேன் என்று சொன்னால் அது மிகையாகாது.

இன்று அந்த மாஸ்டர் பீஸ் நாவல் முடிந்தபோது எனக்கு ஏதோ எவெரெஸ்ட் சிகரம் ஏறியது போன்ற ஒரு பெருமித உணர்வு.

ஒரு இடத்தில கூட மொழியாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்ட உணர்வு தென்படாமல் தமிழ் நாவல் படித்த உணர்வை 1500 பக்கங்கள் முழுவதும் கொடுத்த அந்த சிற்பி யார் என்று வலையில் தேடினால் 75 வயது நிரம்பிய உங்கள் வலைப் பக்கத்தை பார்த்து ஒரு கனம் திகைத்து பின் என்னை மீட்டு உங்களை சாஸ்டாங்கமாக வணங்கினேன்.

நான் ஆங்கிலத்தில் சராசரிக்கும் ஒரு படி மேல் என்று என்னைக் கருதிக்கொண்டாலும், என்னுடைய வாசித்தலில் 80 சதவீதம் ஆங்கிலப் புத்தகங்கள் தான் என்றாலும் இந்த “Crime and Punishment” புத்தகத்தை நான் ஆங்கிலத்தில் படிக்கத் துவங்கி இருந்தால் சத்தியமாக என்னால் 50 பக்கங்களை தாண்டி இருக்க முடியாது. அதோடு நாவலை படிப்பதையே கை வீட்டிருப்பேன்.

அழகான தமிழில் கொஞ்சம் கூட அந்நிய வாசனை இல்லாமல் “குற்றமும் தண்டனையும்” படித்து உள்வாங்கி கொள்ளுவதற்கு எனக்கு இவ்வளவு சிரமமாக இருக்கும் போது நீங்கள் எப்படி, எத்தனை ஆண்டுகளில் மொழிபெயர்த்து இருப்பீர்கள் என்று எண்ணும் போது “நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் வடிவேலு” குறிப்பிடுவதைப்போல் “இப்போவே கண்ண கட்டுதே” என்ற உணர்வுதான் மேலோங்கியது.

படித்த எனக்கே எவரெஸ்ட் சிகரம் ஏறிய பிரமிப்பு என்றால் மொழிபெயர்த்த உங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியை எண்ணி திகைத்துப் போனேன்.

கிட்டத்திட்ட உங்கள் 60 வயதில் இதை மொழிபெயர்த்து இருப்பதை எண்ணும்போது “வயது என்பது வெறும் எண்கள்தானோ” என்று  என்னையும் எழுச்சி கொள்ளச் செய்தீர்கள்.

நீங்கள் மொழிபெயர்த்த 2008 களில் இப்போது இருக்கும் அளவுக்கு தொழில்நுட்பம் கூட இல்லை. வாட்ஸப்போ, யூடுயுபோ, chatGpt யோ, செயற்கை நுண்ணறிவு மற்றும் கூகிள் கூட மிகவும் அடிப்படை வசதிகளை மட்டுமே கொண்டிருந்த  காலத்தில் இவ்வளவு பெரிய 1500 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட, ஆழ்ந்த தத்துவம் மற்றும் தனிமனித மனோதத்துவ பின்புலம் கொண்ட நாவலை நம்மால் மொழிபெயர்க்க முடியும் என்று தொடங்கியதற்கே ஆயிரம் பொற்காசுகள் கொடுத்தாலும் அது தகுந்த சன்மானமாகாது.

உங்கள் வயதையும், புலமையையும், படைப்புகள் மீதான அளப்பரிய காதல் மற்றும் ஈடுபாடு எண்ணி உங்களை எத்தனை முறை வேண்டுமானாலும் வணங்கலாம்.

Everything was handled smoothly and efficiently. I never had to make any extra visits, and there were no avoidable delays. The entire process was handled with such clarity and professionalism that it truly surprised me.

I would especially like to appreciate Ms. Arokiya Mary, whose prompt and competent handling of the work was outstanding—on par with, if not better than, many corporate professionals I’ve come across in my 30 years of experience.

Before we get into cricket, let’s touch on a few thoughts inspired by *three giants of the 19th century—George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx.*

Though from different fields—philosophy, science, and economics— *all three were misunderstood in their time. People labeled them atheists*… …

……but *I believe they simply viewed God differently: not as a figure sitting above, but as a force acting through everything around and within us.*

Shaw beautifully explained this idea using a game of chess.

He saw life as a chessboard. Some are born as kings, queens, or knights—privileged. Most, though, are pawns—ordinary folks.

But in Shaw’s version, the white pawns (us) get the first move. *That’s CHOICE.*

God, playing black, responds to each move with a *CONSEQUENCE.*

But here’s the twist: if a pawn plays well—making honest, smart moves—it can reach the other end and become a queen.

*Even God, Shaw suggests, allows Himself to be defeated by consistent, fair effort.*

– Darwin spoke of this in terms of *ADAPTATION*.

– Marx described it as *dialectical materialism*—the constant push and pull that shapes progress.

*Now to cricket:*

Take Sachin Tendulkar. He chose cricket—his white pawn’s first move.

God didn’t make it easy. Across decades, every milestone—100 centuries, 10,000 runs—came through battles.

*Yet one piece was always missing: the World Cup.*

– That too came only at the very end, as if God tested him to the limit before finally yielding.

*And now, it’s Virat Kohli’s turn.*

*For over 15 years, he’s shown unmatched passion, fitness, and fire.*

He’s earned the runs, the admiration. Yet two feathers are still missing: 10,000 Test runs and that elusive IPL trophy.

*Evolution of Cricket Statistics Since My Graduation Days – Late 1980s*

During my college days in the late 1980s, cricket fans were mainly excited by tournaments like the Sharjah Triangular Series, which often featured India, Pakistan, and a third team in a round-robin format. The Asia Cup was another big event that drew huge interest from Indian fans.

Since then, cricket has changed a lot. We’ve seen new rules like DRS (Decision Review System), Duckworth-Lewis for rain-affected matches, and Power Plays. But one of the most exciting changes has been the smart use of mathematics and statistics to make the game more fair and competitive.

I want to highlight two key changes in how statistics are used in cricket today compared to earlier times:

*Statistical Innovation #1: Team Rankings and Net Run Rate*

Back then (late 1980s):
To rank teams, we simply used the average run rate—total runs scored divided by the number of matches. This method didn’t always reflect how well a team actually performed overall.

Now (especially after the IPL began):
We use something more advanced called Net Run Rate (NRR), which looks at both how fast a team scores and how fast it concedes runs. This gives a much clearer picture of performance.

*What changed:*

Teams can’t just boost their stats by thrashing weaker teams.

Back in the day, some teams could play in a way that helped or hurt other teams’ chances. That’s no longer possible.

Just like how Darwin’s theory of evolution changed how we understand life, cricket too has evolved—not just in how it’s played, but also in how it’s measured and judged.

எங்கள் அலுவலகம் சென்னையில் OMR சாலையில் இருந்து மிக அருகில் உள்ளது. மெட்ரோ ரயில் வேலை நடந்து கொண்டு இருப்பதால் நாங்கள் 1.5 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவு சுற்றி வரவேண்டும். ஆனால் ஒரு 300 மீட்டர் தூரம் எதிர்பக்கமாக (no entry) சென்றால் நாங்கள் 1 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவு மட்டுமல்ல 15-20 நிமிடம் முன்னதாக எங்கள் அலுவலகம் சென்றடைந்து விட முடியும்.

நாங்கள் மட்டுமல்லாது இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனங்கள் மற்றும் ஆட்டோக்கள் எல்லோரும் காலை அலுவலக நேரம் (peak hours) தவிர மற்ற நேரங்களில் அந்த குறுக்குவழிப் பாதையை மட்டுமே தேர்ந்தெடுப்பது வழக்கம்.

இன்று மாலை 5 மணி அளவில் நான் இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் அந்த குறுக்கு வழியில் ஒரு 50 மீட்டர் தொலைவு சென்றிருக்கும் போது ஒரு தாடி வைத்த நடுத்தர வயது மனிதர் இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் எனக்கு எதிர் பக்கத்தில் (சரியான திசையில்) இருந்து என் அருகில் வந்து  கிசுகிசுப்பான குரல் மற்றும் சைகை மொழியில் “போலீஸ், போலீஸ்” என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டே செல்கிறார்.

அப்போதும் அவர் சொன்னது புரியாமலோ அல்லது அவர் தோற்றத்தின் அடிப்படையிலோ சற்று நம்பிக்கை இல்லாமல் எட்டிப்பார்த்துக்கொண்டே இன்னும் ஒரு 50 மீட்டர் தொலைவு கடக்கிறேன்.

மற்றொரு மனிதர் அதே எதிர் திசையில் கிட்டத்திட்ட அதே சங்கேத மொழியில் “போலீஸ்” என்று அறிவுறுத்திக் கொண்டே செல்கிறார்.

அவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் நான் யாரென்றோ, பணக்காரனா, ஏழையா என்று எதுவுமே தெரியாது. பணம் மற்றும் நேர விரயத்தில் இருந்து என்னை ஏன் அந்த ஒருவொருக்கு ஒருவர் சம்பந்தம் இல்லாத அந்த இருவரும் என்னைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும் என்று யோசித்து பார்த்தால் மிகவும் ஆச்சிரியமாகவும், சந்தோசமாகவும் இருந்தது.

அது போலவே எங்கள் வீட்டில் இருந்து ஒரு 100 மீட்டர் தொலைவில் நான் காலையில் இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் செல்லும்போது ஒரு நடுத்தர வயது பெண்மணி தினமும் ஏதோ ஒரு வேலை நிமித்தமாக அந்த வீட்டு வாசலில் நிற்பார்கள்.

கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக நாள் தவறாமல் அந்தப் பெண்மணி ஏதோ ஒரு வேலை பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது ஒரு நாளும் என்னை சட்டை கூட செய்ததில்லை.

ஒரு பத்து தினங்களுக்கு முன்பு திடீரென்று என்னிடம் ஏதோ சைகை செய்தும் ஒலியும் எழுப்பினார்கள். நான் நம்ப முடியாமல் என்னையா அல்லது வேறு யாரையுமோ என்று சுற்றுமுற்றும் திரும்பி பார்க்கிறேன். அந்த பெண்மணி சற்று உரத்த குரலில் என் இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனத்தின் “தாங்கி – ஸ்டாண்ட் ” எடுக்கப்படாமல் இருப்பதை சுட்டிக் காட்டினார்கள்.

மாதத்திற்கு ஒரு முறையாவது யாரோ ஒரு ஆணோ அல்லது பெண்ணோ எங்களை இந்த சென்னை போக்குவரத்து நெரிசலில் தங்கள் இரண்டு சக்கர வாகனங்களில் விரட்டி எங்களை முந்திக்கொண்டு வந்து என் மனைவியின் “சுடிதார்” எங்கள் வாகனத்தில் சிக்கும் அபாயத்தை சுட்டிக்காட்டுவார்கள்.

இவர்கள் யாருமே எங்களை கொஞ்சமும் முன் பின் அறியாதவர்கள். எங்களுடைய நன்றிக்கு கூட காத்திருக்க அவர்களுக்கும் நேரம் கிடையாது.

எந்த சுயபலனும் இல்லாமல், எதையும் எதிர்பார்க்கமல் முன்பின் அறியாதவர்களுக்கு  போக்குவரத்து நெரிசல் மற்றும் ஒலி வேகத்தில் இயங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் சென்னையில் அடுத்தவர்கள் தேவையில்லாத சிக்கலில் மாட்டிக்கொள்ளக் கூடாது என்ற நல்லெண்ணம் மட்டுமே என்று எண்ணும்போது எப்பேற்பட்ட அற்புதமான உலகத்தில் நல்லவர்கள் மத்தியில் வாழ்கிறோம் என்று நினைக்கும் போது எவ்வளவு கஷ்டம் வந்தாலும் இந்த வாழ்க்கையை வென்றுவிடலாம் என்ற நம்பிக்கை பீறிடவே செய்கிறது.

இந்த மனித நற்குனம் காலகாலமாக இருந்து வருகிறதா அல்லது அறிவியல் வளர்ச்சி கண்ட இருபது மற்றும் இருபத்தோராம் நூற்றாண்டு மனிதர்களின் தனிக்குனமா என்று வரலாற்று ஆய்வாளர்கள் தான் சொல்லவேண்டும்.
